Mad #483 (John Ficarra) - Unfortunately, The Zombie Issue - November 2007

Born of Haitian folklore, the "zombie" has always been an impossible creation.  The undead would be extremely weak if it could exist at all.  He would not be able to crack a walnut let alone your cranium.  With all of the ugliness and all of the manners of death that already exist in the world, why create more?  The first zombie movie was White Zombie directed by the immortal Victor Halperin (1895-1983) in 1932 starring the king of horror, Bela Lugosi (1882-1956).  Other important  (?) zombie movies were Plan 9 From Outer Space directed by Ed Wood (1924-1978) in 1959 and the original Night of the Living Dead in 1968 with a cast of unknowns.  In 2007, twenty-three zombie-themed movies were released upon the viewing public including Undead Pool (aka Attack Girls' Swim Team Versus the Undead) and Zombies! Zombies! Zombies! (co-starring Stephanie Miller as "Pamela") with an estimated production budget of $30,000.  Mad editors assigned zombie duties to veteran writer/artists Sergio Aragones and John Caldwell who responded with "A Mad Look at Zombies" and "Things That Really Get Under a Zombie's Skin", respectively.  The better articles in the issue were -- all of the rest of them.  [JAM 11/16/2014]
