Mad #466 (John Ficarra) - Da Vinci Clod Issue - June 2006

Dan Brown sold 80 million copies of his book (Da Vinci Code) and then Ron Howard made a movie of it that grossed $217 million.  Some people would say that this was a successful thing.  It was really just a worldwide scavenger hunt with some religious undertones.  I read it once and saw the movie once.  It was OK.  The Mad editors totally ignored the book but when Columbia Pictures spent $125 million on a movie, the Mad gang leaped into action even though none of the staffers had actually seen it.  This is a story ripe for a parody with drawings by Drucker but nooooooooooooo!  We get two Mona E. Neuman drawings by Mark Fredrickson, two snarky Fundalini bits, nine Scott Maiko jokes about The Last Supper, and some boring outtakes.  Sell, sell, sell.  Are you proud of that effort, Mad editors?  I didn't think so.  [JAM 10/9/2014]
