Mad #163 (Albert Feldstein) - Watergate Issue - December 1973

Five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters on June 17, 1972 at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C.  The investigation of the crime implicated The Committee to Re-Elect the President (Richard Nixon 1913-1994).  Eventually, many Nixon administration officials were found guilty of the cover-up of the event.  Although the investigation was too slow to prevent the election of Nixon to a second term, the pending impeachment process caused Nixon to resign from office on August 9, 1974.  The editor and staff of Mad withheld their comments until this issue with Lou Silverstone's "Malice in Wonderland" that uses the words of Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) and quotations from Nixon, Jeb Magruder, Chuck Colson, John Mitchell (1913-1988), John Dean, Ron Ziegler (1939-2003), H.R. Haldeman (1926-1993), John Ehrlichman (1925-1999), Martha Mitchell (1918-1976), Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) and Spiro Agnew (1918-1996).  Although the Watergate scandal was a huge disgrace, the activities of the Nixon administration were pale in comparison with those of the disastrous eight-year administration of George W. Bush.  [JAM 5/14/2010]
