Mad #134 (Albert Feldstein) - Woodstock Issue - April 1970

Although the Woodstock Music & Art Fair occurred in August 1969, it was worth the wait for the amazing two-page drawing by Sergio Aragones that captured the essence of the three-day event.  With poetry by Frank Jacobs, the prolific Aragones ("World's Fastest Cartoonist") drew "I, Remember, I Remember" in addition to the numerous tiny "marginal" drawings found throughout the pages.  Look for Henry, Charlie Brown, Alfred E. Neuman and Al Jaffee in the crowd.

Reader Neil Wahlert also found Frank Jacobs, Al Feldstein, Bill Gaines, Jerry DeFuccio, Nick Meglin, John Putnam, Antonio Prohias, George Woodbridge and Sergio Aragones in the Woodstock scene.

Frank Jacobs was also the author of "Mad's Up-Dated Modern Day Mother Goose" that offered new nursery rhymes for the 1970 toddlers.  The parody consists of 17 stories drawn by Jack Davis that include excellent caricatures of 1970 icons Jack Benny (1894-1974), Walter Cronkite (1916-2009), Hugh Hefner, Jane Fonda, Warren Beatty, Timothy Leary (1920-1996) and the Beatles.

Saturday Night Live original cast member, Chevy Chase is the author of the back-cover "TV Scene."  This is the only Mad contribution to date by the clever Mr. Chase (nee Cornelius Crane Chase). [JAM 1/19/2010]
