Mad #131 (Albert Feldstein) - Back To Colege Isue - December 1969

The cover promises a "colege isue" but all we got were four pages of photographs showing student unrest of the era with lame references to college courses by Max Brandel.  I remember these times well.  There were protests about the war in Vietnam across the country.  The U.S. involvement in the war was unjust but mainly, us college men did not want to be drafted into this briar patch.

The best articles in this "isue" are "Passionate Gun Love", the magazine parody by Larry Siegel & Jack Davis, and "If Everybody Talked Like Don Rickles" by Earle Doud & Angelo Torres.  The editors warn gun-loving readers to skip the seven-page gun magazine and well they should.  Writer Siegel is clearly not an NRA member.  The parody cover by Davis shows the gun lovers trophies which include a cow, the game warden, Mom and that bear that seems to be awakening.  The stories, ads and opinions generally paint the gun owner as inept and careless.  In the feature story, hunter Gus uses a 77mm. anti-aircraft gun to bag a four-ounce English Sparrow.

Don Rickles fans will enjoy the expansion of the Rickles brand of humor into television - Lawrence Welk (1903-1992), Bert Parks (1914-1992), Captain Kangaroo (Bob Keeshan 1927-2004) and Huntley (1911-1974) & Brinkley (1920-2003); newspapers (Peanuts and Dear Abby); movies (Dracula and Tarzan); and everybody else. Earle Doud could have been a writer for Mr. Rickles. [JAM 1/16/2010]
