Watergate: The Hidden History (Lamar Waldron) - Counterpoint - 2012 - 808 pages

Richard Nixon said that he was not a crook but that was just another one of his lies.  He was the most corrupt public official to reach high office in the history of the United States of America.  His association with organized crime and illegal campaign donations (bribes) dated back to his first first national campaign in 1946.  This well-researched and well-documented volume by author Waldron traces Nixon's history with the help of numerous documents that have been declassified over the years.  Waldron uses every evidence source available to trace Nixon's pattern of criminal activities.  The story involves every major politician of the era as well as Mafia leaders, the CIA, the FBI, the Teamsters Union and private citizens including Howard Hughes and Jack Anderson.  This books seeks to answer two big questions: Why did Nixon send his "Plumbers" to break into Watergate and what was he trying to hide.  Throughout his political life, Nixon sought to cover his obligations and plots with mob leaders.  Although he lost his presidency, he was able to take his largest crimes with him to his grave.  If you are at all interested in what was really happening during those years, this is an important book for you to read.  Unfortunately, in his rush to publish, the author allowed numerous typographical errors to remain in his text.  I have listed some of them at the bottom of this page.[JAM 9/15/2013]
