Hogan's Alley: the magazine of the cartoon arts (Tom Heintjes and Richard E. Marschall) - Bull Moose Publishing Corp.

https://madcoversite.com/modern_magazine_parodies.html

Some of the best fanzines ever written are those devoted to comic art.  Editor Marschall assembled a group of fans/writers/artists in 1994 to create an annual, 144-page  fanzine that may be the best of them all.  Hogan's Alley combines the old with the new, and presents an excellent variety of topics with an obvious love and respect for the talented artists and writers who have given us over 100 years of a wonderful art form.

#1 - Fall 1994 - Lynn Johnston Issue

The cover of the first issue features the art of Charles Schulz (Snoopy the painter), Lynn Johnston (Elly from For Better of Worse), Jack Kirby (The Thing), Will Eisner (The Spirit) and Frank King's Gasoline Alley (Walt & Skeezix).  Inside are interviews, drawings, commentary, and luscious details of these comic art subjects and many more.  Although the editors were not able to continue their goal of a quarterly product, they certainly have achieved the editorial goal of a "Tenth Anniversary" and "the highest standards and good taste, striving to elevate the cartoon arts, holding them as they should be held, to the strictest critical criteria."

[Will Elder] I liked his work very much.  He was a great inspiration to me.  I liked Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman as well.  Some of the artists had no feel for certain kinds of material - like Wally Wood.  You had to be very careful what type of story he was given ... I decided to move to Mexico and would have liked to continue working from there, but they felt the mail was not reliable and it wouldn't work.  Feldstein begged me not to leave; he even offered me commission which turned out to be an entire dollar - which would have raised me to $11 a page!"

[Tom Richmond] "My choice would be Wally Wood,  I think he was a true genius of form, light and its use in comic-book illustration.  I'd ask him about his thought process and how he approaches both the human form and drawing in ink.  I'd ask him about his philosophies behind page and panel design and what he thinks is most important about advancing a story.  I'd want to know who inspired him and whose art he looked to as he was learning his craft.  I'd ask him what kind of underwear he prefers if I thought it would help me draw as well as he could.  I doubt it would, but it couldn't hurt to ask!"
